Jump on the Green Smoothie Train!

In an effort to overhaul my approach to nutrition, I jumped on the green smoothie train. I now drink a smoothie with breakfast. It’s a simple, easy and tasty way to get more vegetables into my diet. I thrive at keeping up with healthy lifestyle choices when I make small changes here and there and let those baby steps motivate me to make bigger changes. Because it wasn’t a huge change to my diet, I have been able to keep it up for almost a year. I even found myself craving them while we were on our three week road trip last summer! We mostly make them at home, but every now and then we’ll grab one at our local smoothie place. Be aware of the ingredients when buying a green smoothie from a store though. Many places add so much fruit that it becomes packed with sugar which takes away from the healthy benefits of the green vegetables. You really don’t need much to mask the bitter flavors of spinach or kale, so look for places that make smoothies with as few ingredients as possible.

Use the measurements below as your base. You can add or subtract the amount of each ingredient based on your tastes, but this is a good starting point. We don’t actually measure anything--this makes it easy.

Makes about one 8 ounce glass of deliciousness that’s only 360 calories!

1 tbs chia seeds- a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, soluble and insoluble fiber, protein and antioxidants

1 cup unsweetened original Almond Milk  (not flavored)

1 five finger pinch of spinach (not a whole handful, but not just a couple of leaves)

1 five finger pinch of kale

1 heaping spoon of peanut butter

1 banana (as ripe as possible)

1 tablespoon raw wheat germ flakes- awesome for energy, fiber, protein and complex carbohydrates

3 ice cubes

1- Add the almond milk and chia seeds to your preferred blending device and let them soak for a few minutes. When chia seeds are soaked they form a gel which will help incorporate them better into the smoothie. Note: you don’t have to do this step.

2- Add the rest of the ingredients and blend!

3- Enjoy!

This is our preferred blending device! It’s pretty small but it seems to be better quality than the bullet.

Once you’ve tried the smoothie out a couple of times you can start getting creative. We’ve been wanting to try one with avocado or even broccoli in it!
