Sleeping through the night is not something I excel at. I wake up frequently from my tossing and turning. I am always looking for ways to help me sleep better so when a friend mentioned Moon Milk, a warm drink she drinks right before bed that has helped her fall asleep and stay asleep, I knew I had to try it. Plus something called Moon Milk sounds so magical! I used this recipe and I’ll admit that I didn’t expect to like it. Putting all of these spices into warm milk did not sound that appealing to me. But I was wrong and it is delicious! It calms me just to smell it and the taste reminds me of one of my favorite foods--Thai curry! I’ve only tried it twice since my friend mentioned it a week ago, but I have felt that it has helped me to sleep more soundly.
Night one: I fell into a deep sleep immediately upon finishing the drink (after brushing my teeth of course!). I don’t remember tossing and turning or waking up at all, however I was groggy when my alarm went off in the morning and I didn’t feel like I shook that feeling for an hour or so. Obviously waking up groggy is not ideal but it isn’t a deal breaker for me. I’d rather have a less fitful sleep and be a bit groggy in the morning than be tired all day.
Night two: Again I fell into a deep uninterrupted sleep, until about an hour before my alarm went off. I didn’t wake up feeling totally refreshed or rested, but I wasn’t groggy this time.
I need to try this ritual a few more times, but I am still hopeful that enjoying it at least a couple of times a week, coupled with my soothing night meditation, will give me a better night's sleep more consistently.
