Today is my 32nd birthday! I’ll be honest, the days leading up to my birthday month and actual birthday didn’t carry the same excitement as they have in years past. It could be because of our current political climate, or because I have been fiercely homesick. But despite the lack of enthusiasm about turning 32 in the past few weeks, I woke up this morning stoked to start celebrating!
Because this is the first, and probably only, birthday that I will spend in Texas I decided that the only way to do it right would be to put on a pair of cowboy boots, and dance the night away to some live country music. What would be a more Texas birthday than a night of honky tonkin!
The night will start at our apartment with fried chicken, a signature cocktail, cowpies (my chocolate cupcakes with salted caramel frosting), and haystacks. Plus my mom’s rum cake that is a Sonja birthday tradition. In keeping with the Texas theme, I used this template for my invites, and I plan to decorate using sunflowers, baby’s breath, wanted posters, bandanas, buckets and cowboy boots (inspo from Pinterest). In the party bags everyone will get a bolo and a mini bottle of Titos Handmade Vodka (made in Texas!).
As is the norm for my birthday week, there are multiple other celebratory events leading up to Saturday’s honky tonk. Today I’m kicking off the festivities by pampering myself with a massage, getting drinks at my favorite bar, Bowen House with Rob and then a yummy dinner TBD. Tomorrow the party will continue when my family arrives and we eat, drink and relax our way to the weekend. I am truly a lucky girl to get to celebrate another year of life with so many fabulous people!
