January is the perfect month to host a game night. The weather is usually less than stellar so sitting in a warm cozy home is very appealing. It is also a mostly free event so your wallet can still recover from the damage it endured during the holidays. AND it doesn’t have to be centered around alcohol which allows any friends participating in Dryuary to join. Here are a few tips for hosting a game night that I plan to use when we finally feel like being social again after the craziness of the holidays!
Play an icebreaker game. A popular one is a game called Werewolf. It is not my favorite but it is easy to learn, doesn’t take a lot of time and can be played with a large group which makes it a very good game to start the evening off with!
Setup 2-3 areas where games can be played. This allows a variety of games to be played so people can pick and choose which games they’d like to play and not get stuck playing something they hate.
Have a few games on hand but invite friends to bring their favorites!
Make a crock pot full of homemade chicken noodle soup. We plan to try out this recipe soon!
If alcohol will be served, do a beer, wine, or mocktail/cocktail pairing. Maybe a sparkling wine with the gemstone-centered game, Splendor (cause gems are sparkly!). A Love Potion #9 Martini with the card game, Love Letter. Or a wheat beer with Settlers of Catan.
I know at our game night we will feature some of my favorites: Splendor, Love Letter, Exploding Kittens, Carcassone and Ticket to Ride. What are your favorite games?
